What is Venturing?
Venturing is the young adult division of the Boy Scouts of America for young men and women ages 14-20 who have completed the eighth grade. Venturing's purpose is to provide positive experiences to help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible adults. Venturing has proven to be successful in developing a positive sense of self-worth and usefulness, creating a desire to learn, providing a structured and productive use of time and developing social adeptness while instilling strong personal values and character.

What is Venturing Crew 1776?
Venturing Crew 1776 is an 18th century, military living history program chartered by the Lombard Historical Museum that will give young men and women the opportunity to experience "firsthand" what it was like to be a common soldier, musician, or camp follower during the American War for Independence. Crew 1776 portrays a New York company that fought with the British army at the Battle of Brooklyn (Long Island). The crew will gather frequently for military drill and maneuvers, read and discuss historical topics, cook and eat authentic foods, work on craft projects of a military nature, camp at historic sites and battlefields, take excursions to local museums, conduct research trips, host "military" movie nights, and much more.

What you can expect.
As living historians, our Venturers can expect to learn a great deal from the practical experiences that only reenacting can provide. They will have many opportunities to try out new skills and ideas while learning from the past. The program will provide a "hands-on" learning environment grounded in academic research that incorporates current state educational curricular requirements. In addition, our Venturers can choose to earn rank advancement and recognition through a customized 18th-century program based on the Boy Scouts of America Venturing Silver Award. By involving our Venturers in this educational pastime, it is our hope that they will excel in their academic studies and take on an increased interest in historical reading and interpretation.

Get involved!
