Next day it was unsafe to enter Brussels unless in a vehicle with doors you could lock, and with windows up, otherwise you were rushed at by men and women alike who kissed you, buffeted you, screamed at you, and wept on you. All Brussels was en fete. In the afternoon I was driving through the town when two newspaper correspondents, whom I had got to know well in those last few days (Edwards who writes for News Chronicle and Chester Wilmott the broadcaster), shouted at me to come and have some tea with them. We very unwisely entered the biggest café in the place. No sooner had we entered the room than everyone stood up and cheered for about two minutes. We were then dragged up to front table and thought we would get something to eat. But not a bit of it. The band stood up, the customers stood up, and we sang the National Anthem, the Belgian National Anthem, the Marseillaise, and the Star Spangled Banner. After that we thought – TEA. But no. We were dragged on to the stage (thunderous applause) and made to sing Tipperary through the microphone. That of course was too much of a good thing and everyone screamed themselves hoarse with applause. Then Monsieur le Patron made a speech of which we could not understand a word as it was in Flemish and then each of us had to make a speech – a speech which I am equally sure they did not understand a word, and the Monsieur le Patron kissed us on both cheeks with tears rolling down his cheeks. All very embarrassing and we got no tea!
